Keller Williams Turns Mega Camp Into Mega Relief

The values and culture of Keller Williams were revealed in full force when Hurricane Harvey struck Texas in September. The hurricane spawned record rainfalls of more than 40 inches of rain over a four day period the led to catastrophic flooding and, tragically, caused at least 90 deaths.

As Hurricane Harvey grew stronger, Keller Williams took action. We changed our plans from hosting Mega Camp, an annual four-day Keller Williams training event due to take place at the Austin Convention Centre, and turned our focus onto a week-long disaster relief campaign - Mega Relief. The campaign saw all of the Keller Williams agents attending join forces with local charities to provide relief to the victims of the hurricane and raise $20m for hurricane recovery.

Darrell King, US Keller Williams Chief Operating Officer, commented on the move: “As we were talking to the Convention Center representatives about the possibility evacuees would be housed there, it became clear to us that doing what we could to help those affected by the storm was more important, and we made the decision to pivot to focus on the relief effort in our backyard,”.

More than 7,000 Keller Williams agents from across the world, including a team from Keller Williams UK, joined forces with nonprofits to clean more than 200 flooded homes, and worked with local businesses to raise money and gather supplies during the day, before returning to Austin for evening events that raised awareness and funds.

Ben Taylor, Managing Director at Keller Williams UK, comments, “It’s been the most extraordinary culture to witness, the best of any organisation that I have ever seen in my career. The logistics and attitudes of organizing something like Mega Relief has been mind-blowing. The tragedy of the hurricane and what Keller Williams achieved in such a short period has really put things into perspective and made me realize that I am proud and privileged to be part of one big family here at Keller Williams.”
